If you don’t find yourself searching for the perfect Cycladic getaway, in a white-and-blue island scenery, then the vibrant, historical Athens is undoubtedly your destination. After a long day of sightseeing, you always end up in a cool bar in one of the hip neighbourhoods of the centre or enjoy a breathtaking view of the Acropolis from the very bar’s rooftop. What could possibly be better? Well, staying at a hotel so close, you can actually walk to and then maybe have the same view from your own veranda!
As a hotel trotter, I have a thing for boutique hotels – little gems of sophisticated design, privacy and great hospitality only meters away from the heartbeat of the city. And I couldn’t be happier to have so many of them in Athens, popping up at an impressive pace in the past few years. At the end of the day, I don’t even have to feel jealous about the hotels’ visitors- I can always organize the perfect staycation in one of them.
This is the ultimate list of the best boutique hotels in Athens for 2022:
The Foundry Hotel

Where the magic happens
Came for the rooftop, stayed for the history! While the wow factor here is obviously the rooftop- an attempt to reinterpret the typical courtyard of a traditional Greek dwelling-, The Foundry Hotel bears also an interesting backstory. This boutique hotel was once an old two-storey foundry-then turned-into a theatre, and, in fact, the design highlights its unique character by merging different textures, colours and styles in each of the 12 fully-equipped apartments.

The Modernist Athens

The Modernist Athens
Having opened in the autumn of 2020, The Modernist Athens is the sister property to the award-winning Modernist Thessaloniki and a second chapter in the expanding hospitality brand created by entrepreneur Kostis Karatzas. It definitely belongs to the list of the best boutique hotels in Athens.
Located in the former Canadian embassy in Kolonaki, this new project maintains the same playful juxtaposition of art deco elements, mid-century detailing and Danish design found in its companion Thessaloniki location. Its high-quality offerings are grounded by the interior and exterior’s cool, well-honed character. The result is a relaxed, elegant environment that makes guests feel at home from the moment they set foot in the lobby.
Sir Athens Hotel

Living the dream in the Attic Suite
If what a visitor of Athens requires is a romantic boutique hotel with design touches and a dose of old-world charm, then Sir Hotel is the right choice. Housed in a tiny neoclassical dollhouse-like building, it evokes the elegance of the Belle Epoque era of the city. I loved the solid color walls and the chic pieces of furniture, but the highlight was the “hidden” attic suite, a fine example of sophisticated urban modernism with a Parisian touch.
