Located in the cultural border between the chic Kolonaki and the bohemian Exarchia, Monsieur Didot combines elegance with cool hospitality!
The centre of Athens has a new entry – the Monsieur Didot boutique hotel promises a signature accommodation experience, with urban character and an “all-time classic” aesthetic.
Located on the intersection of Sina and Didotou, this impressive neoclassical residence dates back to 1880 and was restored with complete respect to the building’s history. Created by a group of friends with a vision, Monsieur Didot aspires to share an unknown side of the capital with guests by harmoniously combining the charm of the past with the amenities and comforts of the present.
The hotel draws from the atmosphere of the “artistic” neighbourhood of Kolonaki, which once acted as a meeting place for writers and literary minds of a bygone era. This is apparent in all spaces of the hotel, with large bookcases bearing an enticing collectible and modern editions. Its name is inspired by the Didot family who were French typewriters, publishers and booksellers and, more specifically, Firmin Didot, a pioneer in typewriting history, inventor of the ‘stereotype‘ and creator of the famous font which carries his name.
The imposing building which houses Monsieur Didot’s “residence” has been reborn, keeping its urban character and with an ode to the vintage Athens in its design and decor, a work of the Babatchas Design Studio. Using traditional methods and natural materials, the team of designers succeeded to highlight the most impressive elements of the space, such as tall, hand-painted ceilings and vintage mosaics and add a modern touch with contemporary construction techniques.
The hotels’ 4 rooms and 2 suites are decorated with luxurious simplicity and an overriding feel of elegance. Earth tones and subtle references to the “all-time classic” aesthetic of “old Athens” shape the personality of each space.
With names inspired by poetry and prose, each room and suite has a unique story to tell, bringing the city’s history back to life. The building’s rooftop is a true ode to light with its room “Τhe Ode to the light” standing out for its open space and modern layout, in complete harmony with the building’s classic character. Its wide, metal-framed windows and private terrace make up an urban setting that bewitches visitors.
Monsieur Didot’s “home away from home” philosophy extends to the gastronomy department. The day always begins with a lavish homemade breakfast, which guests can enjoy in their room or in the specially designed area of the rooftop during the summer months. Inspired by the traditional Greek diet, carefully selected organic ingredients from all over the country are transformed into quick snacks from the “all day” menu, designed by the hotel’s consultant chef.
A true gem of modern-day hospitality with an old fashioned yet cool twist!
