Athens Was Hotel is an oasis in the oasis of Dionysiou Areopagitou street, the most beautiful and iconic street of Athens.
It is a brand new boutique hotel – opened in April 2015 . Μy first thought as an Athenian, was that I feel really jealous of all visitors of my city that have the chance to stay in one of its 21 rooms.
Owner Errika Benakopoulou and well known creative designer Stavros Papagiannis have joined forces to create a hotel which really stands out for its vibes and its design, apart from its location. From the general concept to every small detail, urban modernism of Athenian architecture, as seen during the decades 1930- 1970, becomes the starting point for a modern city hotel, full of iconic design items and city trademarks.
While making a small tour at Athens Was, I stopped a thousand times to capture a general snapshot of the reception, the lobby or the veranda of the Hellenic Suite, as well as to observe lots of details such as the works of art on the walls, design objects, the art de la table, the plants (typical Athenian ones that brought back to me childhood memories), even the bottle of oil on the restaurant table (which as I learned afterwards, it is produced by the owners’ themselves).
Needless to say, I just couldn’t stop photographing the stunning Acropolis view from the Modern Restaurant on the rooftop, which – if you ask me, will soon become a popular spot for the influencers of Athens.
