Where the Mediterranean miracle diet starts
The Greek breakfast is a culinary tradition not to be missed by any traveler. With freshly made bread, home made pies in numerous variations, local cheeses and juicy fruits, the Greek breakfast offers an abundance of tastes and sets one up for the day in the best way.
There are many hotels in Greece that include traditional recipes in their breakfast menus promoting local delicatessen or others that reinvent classic Greek or international breakfast dishes in order to offer a modern gastronomic experience.
Below there is a list of the most awesome hotel breakfasts in Greece:
Grace Hotel Santorini
What an amazing breakfast concept! Among the top offered in Greece, for sure. This daily changing 5-course breakfast menu served at hotel’s Santoro restaurant is indeed a tribute to excellent raw ingredients and traditional products. During the turn down service the night before, Grace Hotel Santorini team give you the following day’s breakfast menu. This is how you discover the next theme. You see, at Grace Santorini, breakfast has a different theme every day.
During my three day stay I tried “Rustic and homey”, “Famous Recipes” and “It’s all Greek to me”. The latter included one of the best ‘kagiana” I have ever tried (eggs with tomato and feta cheese). I was told that you have to stay 14 days to try all breakfasts. Gastronomy plays an integral role throughout the hotel, expertly led by Executive Chef Spyros Agious. Chef Spyros has worked at Grace Santorini since 2009 and has created a unique menu that is influenced by his passion, the flavours and produce of the Cycladic islands, the distinctive cooking of Greek villages and select elements from contemporary worldwide cuisine.
Kyrimai Hotel, Mani
How couldn’t I include this in my list with the best hotel breakfasts in Greece? It all starts with the Maniot breakfast, served in ceramic tableware on a traditional tray. “Mani never tasted better” is the motto of Kyrimai. And they definitely are determined to put words into action. I have to make a special reference to the chef Stavriani Zervakakou and her creative approach to local flavours.
Stavriani combines familiar, traditional tastes with a sense of innovation aiming to please the modern visitor, but also give him or her an authentic experience of Mani’s joys and culture. She also has an active Instagram account where she shares the creative “behind the scene “ fever at her kitchen. While staying there, during our summer holidays, we tried a different kind of pie every morning with fresh fruits and a dish – that Stavriani had just created with all her sources,
All of this served at the breathtaking location of Kyrimai Hotel that you can see here!
Anemi Hotel, Folegandros
A land so rich in goods and with such a great cultural heritage, could not have anything less than an even richer cuisine to show for. Having all these values in their hearts and minds and paying attention to every little detail, the Anemi Hotel team created dishes that you cannot easily forget!
The world famous Greek olive oil, the traditional cheese of Folegandros, the unique pies made with love using homemade recipes of local women, are all tasteful treasures that one has to seek at the exact place they originate from! While staying there I became addicted to the traditional kouloura (a typical Folegandros snack that consists of a sesame bun stuffed with local cream cheese “souroto”, honey and fruits)
Kinsterna Hotel, Monemvasia
Overlooking the legendary castle rock of Monemvasia, Kinsterna Hotel has revived centuries-old traditions such as winemaking and olive oil production, recreating the perfect model of sustainability. Fruit-bearing trees, fertile vegetable patches, aromatic herb gardens and the endless supply of spring water all help support this outstanding philosophy. All this is reflected on the breakfast served at the hotel, one of the most memorable breakfasts I have enjoyed in Greece.
Every morning we would wake up to a perfectly decorated rustic – chic breakfast room, a true microcosm of Greek food culture, where you could find simply everything, from homemade jams and breads to local hams and cheeses, freshly squeezed juices, mountain tea and eggs cooked in all possible ways!
Sani Dunes, Halkidiki
In Sani Dunes, the new grown up retreat that was added to Sani Resort last year, the classic resort bouffet meets the most updated menu card.
First of all the area that is dedicated to breakfast which is called The Market is huge and amazing. There are vertical gardens on some of the walls and before you decide what you are going to taste, you have to explore a series of impressively set buffets, organized in themes. Apart from what one can find at these buffets, there is an a la carte menu as well as a wide choice of healthy dishes. I tried the poached eggs with salmon and avocado which were delicious and I heard a lot of good comments about the eggs white omelet. Fresh fruits seem also to be everywhere in abundance, as they should be in a Greek summer resort. Then there is The Beach House, a relaxing, airy restaurant decorated in a coastal rustic style, that offers the chance to enjoy breakfast on the beachfront. In both places, menus are focused on the freshness and quality of ingredients.
