The Château embodies quintessential 18th-century refinement for an unmistakably 21st-century style “art of living.”
After a storied past spanning three centuries, the Château de Fonscolombe near Aix-en-Provence just opened its doors to the public. This residence, classified as a historical monument and hitherto only used for private occasions, has been transformed into a five-star hotel. The Château de Fonscolombe has stood in the limelight of history since the 18th century, when it was home to enlightened figures and lustrous festivities. The golden hues of this family castle have been entirely restored to provide for a brand-new “art of living.”
The castle grounds are spread out across more than 10 hectares of lush countryside, and feature an arboretum, fountains, sculptures inspired by Chastel, spring water ponds, and vast vineyards. A large swimming pool sits amongst basins decorated with ancient fountains and statues which highlight the gardens. The circular basin with a fountain and three dolphins was inspired by Chastel and pays tribute to the square in Aix-en-Provence of the same name.
The Château is designed like a large house in which the rooms are joined in the spirit of a family residence, all the while maintaining their privacy. You’ll get a feel for life in the castle as soon as you walk up its porch steps, a feeling which extends to each of its 50 rooms. The sitting rooms, where the echoes of lavish Saporta family receptions can still be heard today, have been rearranged for relaxation. Guests can enjoy a book in the library, taste a local wine in the lounge bar, have lunch or dinner in the dining room, play the piano in the gallery, unwind in the game room, challenge someone to some pool, meet friends, or spend time with family. Spacious patios overlooking an historical park and its sculptured fountains allow you to take your breakfast in the sun, or have lunch or dinner in the fabulous natural light of Provence. Located on the first floor of the historic castle, the Spa beckons guests to enjoy a moment of pampering and escape. Dedicated to wellbeing, the Spa features a gym, steam room, and reception area, and offers services such as massages, hand and facial treatments, hairstyling, and makeup. The Château’s wine cellar welcomes guests around a large table where wine lovers can taste vintage reds, rosés, and whites, all organic and from the Fonscolombe vineyards. The wine cellar bar is open at all times to both hotel guests and locals, and boasts a wonderful selection of cocktails and wines, including those from the castle’s vineyards.
