Mandarin Oriental has announced a major expansion in Egypt, bringing together two of the country’s most storied hotels in Luxor and Aswan with the Group’s first luxury Nile river cruise, forming a fully integrated cultural journey set to launch from 2027.
The News
Mandarin Oriental has unveiled plans to significantly expand its presence in Egypt through a destination-led portfolio that unites land and river. The project will see the Group take over the management of two historic properties in Luxor and Aswan, alongside the launch of its first luxury Nile cruise, creating a seamless journey between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan under the Mandarin Oriental brand.
The announcement builds on the forthcoming reopening of Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo, scheduled for 2027, and signals a broader strategic move towards culturally rooted, experience-driven luxury travel.
Two Historic Hotels Reimagined
In Aswan, Mandarin Oriental will assume management of the legendary Old Cataract Hotel from May 2026. The property will continue operating from its heritage building while an extensive renovation of its Nile Wing is carried out. The full transformation is expected to be completed in July 2027, when it will reopen as Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan.

Overlooking the Nile and facing the Temple of Khnum, the hotel will offer a refined collection of rooms and suites, six dining venues, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental and spaces designed to encourage reflection and connection with the surrounding landscape.

In Luxor, the historic Winter Palace will close in early 2026 for a complete restoration, reopening in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor. Set near the Temple of Luxor and overlooking the Nile, the hotel will feature elegant rooms and suites, six dining venues, landscaped gardens, event spaces and The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, reintroducing the property as a destination for both cultural discovery and leisure.
A New Kind of Luxury on the Nile
Complementing the two hotels, Mandarin Oriental will introduce its first luxury river cruise on the Nile. Developed and owned by the Garranah Group and operated in partnership with Mandarin Oriental, the vessel is currently in design development and will offer three, four and seven-night itineraries between Luxor and Aswan.
Rather than positioning the cruise as simple transportation, the concept centres on a guided cultural journey. Generously sized suites, multiple dining venues and a dedicated wellness space will be paired with curated programming, including expert-led talks and immersive excursions designed to create continuity between land and river.
Looking Ahead
With the reopening of Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo, the transformation of the Old Cataract and Winter Palace, and the launch of the Nile cruise all scheduled for 2027, the Group is quietly assembling one of the most ambitious luxury hospitality narratives in Egypt.
The announcement further reinforces Mandarin Oriental’s focus on heritage-led destinations and culturally driven experiences, a space we continue to follow closely in our Hotel News coverage.
