Among the most striking locations in the 2022 film adaptation of Death on the Nile is a grand hotel overlooking the Nile. But does the hotel in the film really exist and what is its story in real life.
The Real Hotel Behind Death on the Nile
The hotel most closely associated with Agatha Christie’s novel is the historic Old Cataract in Aswan, first opened in 1899 during the golden age of Nile travel. Built to attract European visitors exploring Egypt by steamship, the property quickly became one of the most prestigious addresses along the river. Among its most famous guests was Agatha Christie, who stayed at the hotel while travelling with her husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan. It was here that she wrote much of Death on the Nile, forever linking the hotel to one of the most enduring works of detective fiction.

From the 1978 Film to the 2022 Remake
The 1978 adaptation of Death on the Nile famously featured the Old Cataract itself, allowing audiences to see the hotel’s façade and Nile setting as part of the film’s atmosphere.

In contrast, the 2022 adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh recreated much of the hotel environment at Longcross Studios in the United Kingdom. Production designers built elaborate sets inspired by research conducted in Egypt, resulting in a cinematic interpretation rather than extensive on-location filming.
Was the 2022 Film Shot at the Old Cataract
Although the Old Cataract inspired the atmosphere of the film, much of the 2022 adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh was recreated at Longcross Studios in the United Kingdom. Production designers built detailed sets based on visual research from Egypt, recreating the grandeur of a Nile palace hotel rather than filming extensively on location.
This means the hotel in the 2022 film is a cinematic interpretation rather than a direct on-site shoot.
The Old Cataract Today and Its Next Chapter
The Old Cataract has operated in recent years as Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, maintaining its position as one of Egypt’s most recognisable heritage hotels. Overlooking the Nile and facing Elephantine Island, it continues to attract travellers drawn to its literary history and architectural presence.
The hotel is now set to enter a new era under Mandarin Oriental, which has announced plans to assume management as part of a broader expansion in Egypt. The transition signals a heritage-led restoration rather than a reinvention, positioning the property within a larger luxury journey linking Aswan, Luxor and the Nile.

In the Nubian Desert on the banks of the Nile, opposite Elephantine Island, this ravishing hotel with its legendary guest list of royals and dignitaries is both ideal for romantic getaways, and a perfect venue for small summits and corporate meetings.
The HotelTrotter’s Insider Note
The Old Cataract is less a film set and more a setting in its own right. Its terraces, river views and long guest list shaped the literary imagination that later defined Death on the Nile. Its upcoming transformation under Mandarin Oriental suggests continuity rather than change, reinforcing the idea that some hotels belong to the story as much as to the destination.
