Building’s History and Transformation: The Dolli at Acropolis is housed in the historic Kallimasiotis Mansion, located in the vibrant heart of Old Town Athens, just moments away from the Acropolis. This monumental building, originally constructed in 1925 as a private mansion, has undergone a series of transformations: from a luxury fabric department store, Bazaar d’Orient, Tsantilis, and Hitiroglou, to finally becoming the jewel of Grecotel’s collection of luxurious hotels in 2023.
Architectural Significance: The mansion’s design was entrusted to the renowned architect Andreas Kriezis by ship owner Dimitrios Kallimasiotis. Kriezis, also responsible for transforming the Athenian Royal Palace into the current Greek Parliament Building, played a crucial role in creating this masterpiece of the eclectic architectural movement, characterized by its symmetry, grand style, and rich sculptural decorations.
Restoration and Renovation: Grecotel’s commitment to preserving the building’s historical integrity while providing a luxurious modern experience is evident in the meticulous 5-year restoration and renovation project. Visitors are now welcomed by The Dolli’s immaculate façade, stunning architectural features, and light that harmoniously blends with the Acropolis and the surrounding ancient ruins.
Interior Design and Art: The Dolli’s interior is a visual feast, blending whimsy, antiquity, and modern design. The lobby features the Sun of Vergina, an ancient Macedonian emblem, and various other preserved decorative patterns, staying true to the eclecticism movement. Guests can explore a rich collection of art and design, including works by Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, François-Xavier, and Claude Lalanne, as well as contemporary designers like Pierre Augustin Rose.
Accommodation: The hotel offers 46 meticulously designed rooms, suites, and apartments, providing a luxurious and comfortable stay. The rooms are characterized by their airy and light atmosphere, with a color scheme of white and beige, highlighted by occasional pops of light yellow. Large windows ensure plenty of natural light, while the beds provide supreme comfort. A welcoming touch is added with the provision of a marble bundt cake and plums for snacking.
The Rooftop Experience: Perhaps the most striking feature of The Dolli is its rooftop, hosting a signature restaurant and an infinity pool, both offering unparalleled views of the Acropolis, archaeological sites, and the city of Athens. The rooftop has been transformed into a unique destination of its own, a vision brought to life by Stelios Kois, creating a divine piece of architecture and a space where time stands still.
The Dolli at Acropolis stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful restoration, blending the past’s grandeur with the present’s luxury and offering guests a unique and enchanting experience in the heart of Athens.
