Skýra Retreat opens December 2025 near Rovaniemi, offering elemental Nordic luxury, restored 1950s architecture, bespoke suites and authentic Finnish wellness
A New Lapland Retreat Opens December 2025

Skýra Retreat, an intimate new destination overlooking Lake Norvajärvi in Finnish Lapland, will welcome its first guests in December 2025. Located just outside Rovaniemi, the boutique property introduces a refined interpretation of Nordic luxury—rooted in elemental design, heritage architecture, and the quiet rhythm of the Arctic landscape. At its heart is a beautifully restored 1950s village schoolhouse, framed by ancient forests and reimagined as a serene Nordic hideaway. The project is the vision of founder Susanne Hulbekkmo, whose approach emphasises authenticity, craft, and understated excellence. The retreat has already attracted international attention as the first fully Finnish-owned property to join Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
* The hotel also appears in our edit of the best new luxury hotels to visit in 2026.
Design Led by Finnish Talent
Skýra Retreat is shaped by a collective of Finnish designers and architects. Design Saarinen, under the direction of Marjo Saarinen, sets the tone with a palette inspired by Lapland’s natural light—warm woods, soft textures, and nature-infused colour harmonies. The architectural direction comes from UKI Arkkitehdit, one of Finland’s leading studios. Lead architect Johannes Jutila and architect Enni Hukka conceived the new log suites and spa, weaving contemporary minimalism into the preserved historic framework of the Schoolhouse. A defining moment in the restoration was the decision to reveal the original log structure of the Schoolhouse—covered for decades under cardboard and wallpaper. This rediscovery celebrates both mid-century Finnish resourcefulness and the enduring beauty of local craft.
Four Distinct Room Categories Inspired by Nordic Living
Skýra Retreat offers a deliberately small and curated selection of accommodations, each reflecting Finnish traditions of simplicity, tactility, and closeness to nature.
Grande Suites – In the Restored Schoolhouse
Hand-restored log walls, private saunas, freestanding bathtubs and bespoke amenities—including a champagne button—showcase thoughtful indulgence.
Log Suites – Contemporary Forest Villas
Fireplace lounges, private saunas, forest-facing terraces and a serene upstairs loft for yoga or reading create a modern interpretation of the classic Finnish cabin.
Teacher’s Chambers – Story-filled Character Suites
Once the living quarters of the school’s staff, these four suites retain their narrative charm with curated libraries, thoughtful details and warm Scandinavian textures.
Private Lakeside Villa – A Secluded Arctic Escape
A three-bedroom residence directly on the lake, complete with sauna, kitchen, panoramic living spaces, and private host services (including chef and childcare options).
Nordic Dining Rooted in Seasonality and Craft
Culinary life at Skýra Retreat evolves with the Arctic seasons. Days begin with à la carte breakfasts served in the Schoolhouse; lunches and pullakahvit (coffee and pastries, Finnish style) follow; evenings culminate in a refined three-course dinner. The kitchen blends Nordic simplicity with French technique, focusing on seasonal ingredients and local producers. Sustainability informs every choice—fruit peels become cocktail bases, syrups are made in-house, and traditional recipes are interpreted with contemporary elegance. Even the storytelling plays a role: a signature blueberry dessert nods to children once picking berries for the school cook in late summer.
A Finnish Spa Experience Open to the Sky
The spa is inspired by the Finnish thermal cycle—heat, cold, rest, repeat—and is designed as an open-air sanctuary. Experiences include:
- panoramic saunas
- heated outdoor Jacuzzis
- invigorating cold plunges
- wild swims in Lake Norvajärvi
A standout feature is the Private Folklore Sauna, guided by a dedicated sauna host using traditional rituals, incantations, and birch-whisking for an immersive cultural experience. Signature treatments incorporate Finnish botanical wisdom, such as:
- Brain Relief – a rhythmic neuro-physiological therapy for deep nervous-system calm
- Herbal Embrace – an aromatic oil massage using herbs like meadowsweet, sweetgrass, lemon balm or calendula
Daily wellness programming includes forest bathing, yoga, creative workshops, sound baths, and seasonal outdoor adventures organised with trusted regional partners.
A New Chapter for Arctic Hospitality
With its commitment to Finnish heritage, craftsmanship and nature-led wellbeing, Skýra Retreat introduces a fresh, quietly luxurious perspective to the Lapland hotel landscape—one defined not by excess, but by elemental beauty and meaningful simplicity.
