A dark chocolate amphora filled with salted hazelnut caramel — Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has created the Easter egg that ancient Greece deserved.
Some hotels do Easter eggs. Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens does Easter eggs shaped like ancient Greek amphorae. There is a difference. The creation belongs to Executive Pastry Chef Michalis Chatzikalimeris, and it is genuinely one of the more beautiful Easter objects we have come across this season. The amphora – that iconic terracotta vessel that once carried wine, oil and grain across the ancient Mediterranean – is reimagined here in dark chocolate, hand-crafted and filled with a combination that is as considered as the shape itself: salted hazelnut caramel, caramelised white chocolate, crispy wafer, and caramelised hazelnuts. Rich, layered, and deeply satisfying in the way that only things made with actual intention tend to be.

The cultural reference, on the Athens Riviera, feels completely earned. You are, after all, 30 minutes from the Acropolis. The ancient world is not a mood board here, it is the backdrop. And there is something quietly lovely about a pastry kitchen that uses it not as decoration but as the starting point for a story. A chocolate egg that makes you think about antiquity is not something you come across every day.
The amphora egg is available from the hotel’s all-day café Astron from March 31 at €55, a considered Easter gift, a very good souvenir, or simply a reason to stop by even if you’re not staying.
The Easter Pastry Edit at Astron
Beyond the amphora, Chef Michalis Chatzikalimeris has put together an entire Easter pastry edit at Astron that is worth making time for. A Chocolate Palette with double chocolate cremeux and hazelnut crispy base. A Saint Honoré Vanilla Caramel built around caramelised choux pastry. Hand-painted chocolate eggs in jewel colours that look almost too good to crack open. It is the kind of display that earns its place on your feed before it earns its place at the table.
For guests staying at the hotel over Easter, braided sweetbread tsoureki arrives at breakfast from Holy Thursday at Mercato, the hotel’s Italian trattoria. Small details, carefully placed – which is, come to think of it, exactly how you’d describe the amphora egg itself. Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has always understood that the best luxury is specific. This Easter, that specificity comes in dark chocolate, shaped like ancient Greece, and filled with salted hazelnut caramel. We’ll take two.
