A View Worth the Wait
Some places you arrive at with your breath already half-held—expectations sky-high, photos memorized, reviews devoured. Tucked into the lesser-known Marathi region near Chania, JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa this newly opened retreat, managed by Swot Hospitality, had been on every design enthusiast’s radar since its first renderings.

I came expecting beautiful architecture and refined hospitality. What I didn’t expect? The sea. Those cool, crystalline waters—turquoise with a quiet intensity—offered not just beauty but baptism. And just like that, JW Marriott’s first Mediterranean beach resort seduced me beyond style. It brought me stillness.
Designing Stillness: The Architecture of Harmony
Designed by the acclaimed Block722 studio, the resort doesn’t simply sit on the land—it converses with it. Roofs are planted, not paved. Marble and wood are used with reverence, not excess. Ancient olive and carob trees dot the landscape like natural sculptures, anchoring the resort in its Cretan heritage. This is luxury pared back to its most meaningful essence: connection to place.

The rooms—160 in total, including suites and villas—are sanctuaries of soft Mediterranean tones: terracotta, olive, sand, stone. Earthy, tactile, and warm. Most come with private pools, while all offer sweeping views through panoramic windows. The Junior Suites 4020 and 4021 are my personal tip: book them for uninterrupted sea views that stretch endlessly across the horizon. For those seeking privacy and a cinematic escape, villas 6003 and 6005—spread across two levels—are your go-to. They overlook nothing but blue.
Dining with a View (and a Story)
Meals here aren’t just about flavor — they are about place, view, and even detail. One afternoon at Cuccagna, while facing the lagoon under an olive tree, my eye caught the ceramics. Every restaurant has its own set of plates and graphics, all created by Saint of Athens and Welle Contemporary. It’s a subtle detail, but one that speaks volumes about the thoughtfulness of this resort.

At ANOEE, chef Manolis Papoutsakis served us the ultimate taste of Crete: fragrant pilafi with lamb. The dish was unforgettable, but so was the view of Souda Bay — little boats drifting, skies shifting color, a living postcard that framed the meal.
At Õnalos, lobster pasta and grilled soupia brought the Aegean to the table in the most delicious way.
At Cuccagna, rustic Italian flavors were paired with atmosphere: a slow-cooked ragù, followed by desserts that stole the show — the pistachio millefeuille and a tiramisu worth traveling for.

Even the cocktails have their own island identity. Created with Line Athens (ranked No. 6 in The World’s 50 Best Bars), they weave herbs from the JW Garden into refreshing mixes. My tip? The Cretan Spritz — herbal, sparkling, and perfectly sun-soaked — best enjoyed by the pool in the late afternoon.
Pools, Sunsets, and the Sea that Wins Every Time
There are three pools: an adults-only sanctuary, a lively family pool, and a mixed-use option. Each offers idyllic views and shaded lounging areas. And yet, no matter how beautiful they are, they always play second fiddle to the sea.

It is down by the shore, on those mustard-yellow sunbeds, that you feel the magic of JW Marriott Crete. Everyone dives in, laughter echoing off the rocks, and for a moment the resort disappears. You could be anywhere along the wild Cretan coastline, swimming in turquoise solitude. That feeling of freedom, of being suspended between sky and sea, is the memory that lingers.

Wellness at Anoseas Spa
No stay at JW Marriott Crete would be complete without time at Anoseas Spa, the resort’s serene sanctuary of well-being. Here I discovered something truly unique: Margaret Dabbs London treatments, making their debut in Greece and available exclusively at this property. Combined with Seaskin Life products, the therapies feel both restorative and indulgent, blending international expertise with local inspiration.
The spa’s facilities are equally impressive, a KLAFS-designed wet area, Lemi electrical treatment beds, and spaces that invite complete relaxation. Beyond treatments, the resort weaves wellness into daily life through movement classes paired with cultural activities, creating experiences that nurture both body and spirit. For me, Anoseas Spa felt less like a hotel facility and more like a journey into balance, the perfect complement to the energy of Crete’s sea and sun.
Final Thoughts: A Resort Beyond Expectations
JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa is more than a brand debut in Greece. It is a place where architecture feels inseparable from nature, where gastronomy is anchored in tradition yet elevated with imagination, and where the sea offers not just beauty but stillness.
For me, it wasn’t only about the design or the refined hospitality. It was about the pilafi overlooking Souda Bay, the ceramics that caught my eye on the way to a swim, the ritual of the Cretan Spritz, and above all, the turquoise waters that made me feel free.
This is not just a resort. It’s a redefinition of what luxury on Crete can be: grounded, graceful, and unforgettable.
